Born in a Vermont farmhouse and possessing little formal scientific training, Wilson Alwyn Bentley had an obsession with photographing snow crystals (which we call "flakes"). His obsession turned into innovation, and today the Bentley Snow Crystal Collection at the Buffalo Museum of Science recognizes him as the inventor of photomicrography. 154 photos are viewable online -- but he took 11,000 images between 1880 and 1926.

That's incredibly cool. Have you looked closely enough to ensure that none of those flakes are identical? ;)

I just found this great store called: "Snowflake Bentley Store" online... it has the most beautiful crystal snowflake ornaments designed after Wilson Bentley's photographs, and also jewlery designed after the pictures. Definatley worth looking up!!!!

The Snowflake Bentley Store referred to by Ann in her e-mail is run by Bentley Crystal which stole and plagiarized from the non-profit Jericho Historical Society in Vermont. The JHS is the conservator of the Snowflake Bentley museum and archives. Please do not do business with Bentley Crystal. For a legitimate support of Snowflake Bentley, please see www.snowflakebentley.com.
