[mefi-projects] #049 13-Oct-2002

Fellow MeFites:

This week we have four entries. The one from last week, I stupidly misfiled
and forgot to send out, so the contest deadline has run out, but it's still
a cool site. Dig in!

Also, note that an archive of this mailing list is now available on the Web
at <http://www.jerrykindall.com/mefi-projects/>.

First Words <http://www.newmars.com/firstwords>
What do you think the first words on Mars will be? To celebrate World
Space Week, we asked this question to Terry Pratchett, Kim Stanley Robinson,
Cory Doctorow, Charlie Stross, Richard Stallman and others. We're also
asking you to submit your ideas for our First Words competition, in which
there are over $300 of prizes up for grabs!

dayku <http://randomwalks.com/dayku>
                                                   Can haiku stop war?
Only one way to find out!
                                                 dayku: poems for peace.

They That Go Down To The Sea In Ships <http://www.evanizer.com/sailors>
A website devoted to my collection of old photographs of sailors from
the early 20th century.

Breeding Images <http://www.acooke.org/cgi-bin/breed.py>
Select two parent images to combine and a child image to replace. Click
"breed" and repeat. Hopefully we'll iterate toward something pretty. Some
results from earlier testing (with slightly simpler parameters) can be seen
at <http://www.acooke.org/cgi-bin/photo.py?name=breed-orange> (the idea
isn't new, but this uses a new representation for the images).
